Purim Supplies!

megillah

Yes folks - it's Party Time again - and many thanks, once again, to Diana for the information.

There is now a notice on the Kosher dry goods shelves at the end of Aisle 10, in Sainsbury's at Garthdee, stating that Passover products will be available from Friday, 14 March. The chilled Kosher section in Aisle 2 is now stocked with Tomor margarine; both the spreadable sort and the foil-wrapped, cooking variety.

In the wine section, in between Portugal and East European (Geography is obviously not their strong point) there are some Kosher wines -

Kedem Kiddush Wine (try it chilled, it's nicer); Givon Samson, extra Dry; Barkan Cabernet Sauvignon. Currently these are on a "Wine buy 6 Save 5%" deal. There are still red and white Israeli kosher wines on sale at the new Tesco at Danestone, but as these tend to move around from week to week you may have to hunt for them.

However Tesco at Danestone now stocks a rather nice Israeli hummus, and there were also some Yarden deli goods there last week.

At the Berryden Sainsburys, there is still good old Menorah Palwin no 4; and for some strange reason, next to the cleaning products, Channukah candles for £1.99. (I have not worked out yet whether they are very early, or very late...)

Here are also some useful links about food additives from the OU.

Hannukah Sameach!

You may be aware that there is Israeli Chalav Yisrael Feta cheese in the Kosher section on aisle 2 at Sainsbury's Garthdee. Just in time for Chanukah.

When shopping at that section, please keep your eyes open for any non-K items. Recently Diana had the Duty Manager (her name is Yvonne and she can be contacted at the Customer Services desk) remove packages of pork fritadelles, which looked very much like large felafel, and which Head Office had instructed to be shelved there.

Food and Supplies - Pesach Special!

This evening there was some fresh horse radish root in the vegetable section at Sainsbury's Garthdee. Not sure of the aisle number, but it is the non-refrigerated part of the section stocked with potatoes, other root veg and hardy British veg such as cabbage, leeks, etc.… The box of horse radish was on the top shelf somewhere in the middle of the side facing the herbs, green beans, ginger, chillies, etc.

The roots have been "shrink wrapped" and are of various lengths from about 30cm/12 inches and will be weighed at the checkout. There was not a great deal, so go as soon as you can.

Rakusen's Kosher le Pesach Medium Matzo meal is now available at the end of aisle ten, but although Sainsbury's did say about a week ago that a lot more for Pesach was expected, there was not very much variety or quantity in either the dry goods section or in the deli section.

A website recommended by the JC for Pesach preparations is www.passoveruk.com , which includes a library of singalong audio and video clips.

Another website devoted entirely to chazzanut and including the entire seder service, Hallel, and the traditional songs all sung at a reasonable pace can be found at http://www.virtualcantor.com/haggadah.htm .

The Laws of Kashrut

Kashrut is the body of Jewish law dealing with what foods we can and cannot eat and how those foods must be prepared and eaten. "Kashrut" comes from the same Hebrew root word as "Kosher", meaning fit, proper or correct.

We hope to eventually expand this page into some links containing recipes and other goodies. In the meantime, an excellent description of kashrut can be found at http://www.jewfaq.org/kashrut.htm

Aberdeen is a difficult place to keep strict Jewish dietary laws, as there is no ready source of osher meats, kosher restaurants or delis. For this reason, many of us locals are more-or-less vegetarian, or fish eaters - Aberdeen still has a thriving fish industry and many local delicacies, such as smoked salmon, are fish-based!

In the meantime, thanks must go to Diana as both the inspiration, and much of the source, of this particular page.

Where To Shop in Aberdeen

The Bon Accord Centre

Since the Bon Accord Centre at the bottom of George Street/Schoolhill was recently renovated, there is a coffee bar type of thing just outside Woolworths/Disney at the glass lift. As well as coffee and eats it also sells Ben and Jerry's ice cream to take away, in tubs or cones, certified Kosher Dairy.

Sainsury's, Garthdee

Regular visitors to the shul will now know that there is a Kosher deli chilled section at Sainsbury's in Garthdee (just off the A92 south, next to B&Q, across the road from the big Asda). There is now a second Kosher section in the store, with candles (shabbat and memorial), various dry goods including stock cubes, bags of sweets, soups, biscuits, noodles, jars of gefilte fish, falafel mix, matzohs, other things certified by the KLBD, the OU, Manchester Beth Din. A few carry Pesadik certification.

The Kosher deli section is stocked with herring in jars, cod roe pate, chopped liver, fish balls, mini latkes, salami, pastrami, Bloom's salt beef, a variety of franks and wieners, crumbed fish, smoked turkey and chicken and Yarden salads.

This is probably a use-it-or-lose-it situation as Sainsbury's are quite ruthless about withdrawing stock that doesn't turn over at some predetermined rate. So GO SHOP, PEOPLE!!!

To find the Kosher sections go from the entrance to aisle 1 (straight ahead). Take a sharp right just before "Health and Beauty" and look up to the roof-hung signs for aisle 10. On the left-back wall the "Special Selection" is prominently displayed and signposted. The end shelves of the gondola situated between aisles 10 and 11 is the Kosher non-chilled section.

The Kosher deli foods are on aisle 2. Foods for universal consumption but carrying hechshers e.g. Haagen-Dasz, Ben and Jerry's, Jacobs Crackers, Good Old Palwin #10, are all shelved throughout the store according to their food type.

Tesco, Danestone

Also at Tesco, you will find such items as Rakusen's Matzo Meal, although these are spread throughout the store with the other mainstream goods. In the wines section they currently have a promo on Yarden wines (£14.49 for 2) as well as stocking the usual Palwin #4, #10 and #11 (l'Hayim - tastes like raisins!) This week they also have deals on Givon Samson region sweet red wine and Kedem Kiddush wine, as both are being discontinued.

It's because you are not buying enough of it, people! So get yer cheque books out!!!

Hopefully soon...

...lots of tasty recipes for both holiday and everyday food will be linked here. All contributions gratefully received!
