Renewal Project - November 2011

At long last - we have finally gotten rid of our "vintage" 1970s yellow and orange stair carpet! Much thanks has to go to Yonni who worked very hard to remove the old one, and although the building is now a lot colder (and noisier) it's only going to be temporary as the new one will be arriving shortly. It will give a wonderful lift to the building, as well as being much safer than the old one, which was worn on the stairs and had holes in some places. We will post a picture of it once it is in situ to let everyone see.

Do you buy stuff online?

Easy Fundraising is our new initiative to help raise cash for the Shul renovations. For every online purchase you make from over 2000 retailers, a small %age of their profit comes to us instead! All you have to do is visit the Easy Fundraising site first, then the retailer - and shop as normal.

It really is that easy, and does not cost you anything!

June 2011

We were all delighted when planning permission was finally granted to turn have our basement converted into an office.  There are a couple of conditions set relating to the buildling materials used for the parking area, but both were anticipated and neither presents any difficulties.

The next stage of this project will be to get council approval for the related structural drawings. These are needed to ensure the project meets building regulations, and once this second level of approval is given, work can finally proceed!

Our thanks must of course go to both Eldad and Julien for their help getting us this far. The conversion and rental from it should help ensure the viability of our Shul for many years and generations to come.

November 2010

The plans for the lower floor conversion have now been submitted to Aberdeen City Council, and we are still sourcing finances from various bodies such as the National Trust. The idea is to completely refurbish the basement space for rental, remove some of the ruins at the very back of the garden and replace half of the yard with car parking facilities. And that is just for starters! In addition, we have had the existing windows strengthened, but some will have to be replaced in the not too distant future, to maintain the weatherproofing of the building. Much thanks must go to Eldad, without whom this would have been a lot more difficult, if not impossible!

April 2010

We are delighted to report that our first-floor leak has been repaired, and we now have a nice new bathroom in situ. Both the bathroom and the basement flat stairs have nice new, safe flooring too, and we are all well pleased with the results. Elke has now taken over the caretaking duties from Gladys, so we are in a good position to start "redding up" other areas of the shul building.

After jumping through a lot of administrative hoops, we are now officially listed as a charity on Ebay! We would encourage anybody who regularly sells things on Ebay, to nominate us as a recipient of part of the sale proceeds. You can choose to donate as little as 10% of your final selling price, simply by filling in a drop-down box when you list your items; it really is as quick and simple as that, you don't have anything else to do at all, and we could certainly use your donation. Why not have a clear-out today, make yourself some space and extra cash, and benefit the shul as well? Our official MissionFish/Ebay page is here and we hope to have some listings up there very shortly.

January 2010

At our last meeting, some hard decisions regarding the future of the shul in the Dee Street building had to be made. As a general policy, the aim is to try and hold onto our shul building if at all possible. As anyone dealing with old buildings will know, however, the moment one problem has been resolved, another pops up...and another.... and another!

The good news is that work has already started on repairing our hidden leak in the first-floor bathroom, which unfortunately went undetected for quite some time. The end result was that quite a lot of floorboard had rotted over the years, and required to be replaced; the leak had also damaged some plasterwork in the ceiling below, and that will be tackled next. We now have nice new floorboards and the bath will be replaced shortly.

The other major project we have to start is the electrical work for the entire building. This requires earthing, the fitting of modern RCB boards, some rewiring and new meters. This work is absolutely essential for the health, safety and comfort of both our congregation and tenants, so we really don't have much of a choice!

As the electrical work will be a very large and expensive undertaking, it will leave very little remaining our Renewal Fund. Sadly, the less essential - but much more interesting - work, such as recarpetting the stairs and interior decoration, will have to wait until another time. Other jobs further down the "to do" list include upgrading the basement flat, repairing the windows in the attic flat, fixing up the back hall, and finally doing something about the Victorian toilet block on the ground floor!

The short version of the story is that we still need to raise something in the region of £50,000 to do everything that we need to do. Some of this money, we hope to raise through appeals to heritage societies and other bodies, but the bulk of it will have to come from us - members, friends and benefactors.

We already have several ideas underway to help raise the necessary cash. It will require a lot of effort to put these strategies into place. We are, however, a viable and growing Congregation, and we are not a people who give up easily, just because the going gets a bit tough!

And of course, to those who have already given, of their time, effort and cash, we sincerely thank you.

Our shul is, for the small community here in the North East, the cornerstone of our spiritual existence and Jewish life. We love our shul and are working hard to ensure that it remains viable; indeed, that it continues to thrive and grow. This task is, of course, all the harder given the current economic climate.

But please be assured that every single penny that comes into our Fund will be carefully budgeted, and spent where it is needed the most. Our shul was founded right at the end of the war, in 1945, when times were hard and people had next to nothing; we owe it not only to our founders, but to the next generation, to take up the challenge of keeping our shul alive. If they could do it, so can we!
